Village
Manager Abe Zambrano’s employment contract is up for renewal, and the
Village Board will be voting on it Monday night (9/15/2014).
Is the
allegedly “open government” of Wiegman/Gallelli/Slippen going to let the
public see the proposed contract prior to the vote? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
The public is stuck with whatever deal the Board and the Village Manager have privately agreed to.
Well, this isn’t really so different from the usual course of action
with these folks, but now we don’t even get to voice our opinion before
they commit us to a contract of unknown duration, unknown benefits, and
unknown burdens. This is open government?
When a
Croton United member requested a copy of the proposed contract pursuant
to FOIL, he was told “This document is considered a draft document
until approved. Once the document is approved and sign [sic] it can be
FOILed.”
Isn’t every proposed action on
every Village Board agenda a “draft document” by this definition? Yet
other proposed agreements to be considered at Village Board meetings are
routinely sent out to the public with the agenda. Why not this one?
Croton United wants to know where our tax dollars are going
before we commit to spending them. We want an opportunity to discuss
what the terms of the Village’s top executive's employment are going to
be – BEFORE the Village signs on the dotted line. In short, we want
truly open and fiscally responsible government, not the present Board’s
parody of it.
