--Resident
Peter Marengo also left a very important 9/7 comment regarding last
year's event at a posting; it is re-printed as follows below: "I am writing about the Toughman event that is occurring today in our
village. As a practicing Catholic, when an entire village is taken over
to the extent of shutting down major roads and arteries on an entire
Sunday morning in order to host such an event is disgraceful. My family
and I were late for 8:00 Mass (we attend St. Augustine in Ossining,
just over the 9A bridge), even though we left the house at 7:35 knowing
that we were in for detours. The detour for a 2-mile trip was 15 miles.
Traditionally, Sundays are set aside, especially in the
mornings, as a day of rest, reflection and out of respect for
faith-based people. I understand that we only have 2 weekend days per
week but we should reconsider hosting these events or at least propose
that we wait until 12 noon to altar the roads so that people may go to
their respective church services. By law, citizens cannot buy alcohol
until that time on a Sunday for religious purposes – we should do the
same for things like this that have an even more dramatic effect on the
community at large."

THANK YOU FOR PULLING THIS ALL TOGETHER! Gratefully, Marty
ReplyDeleteThis event is what is wrong with Croton government in a nutshell. We must be a thorn in their sides.
ReplyDeleteAre these people out of their minds again? Last year everyone had to fight to stop them from doing a five year agreement and they did, right before the election and only because they got pressure from Croton United, the fire people, the church people, you would think they would JUST STOP DOING THIS without everyone have to get all excised again. They are truly what is wrong with Croton government and the people who keep electing them need to open their eyes. Wake up Croton wake up!

You can't make this stuff up.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is why people in other communities bristle about Croton in September. But here's what I remember best. There was a big 911 ceremony on the same day day of the Toughman one year and the mayor showed up in a tee shirt to the ceremony. Everyone was dressed the way there supposed to be. Almost everyone. When I opened up that Gazette and saw the picture, I almost died laughing. Truth is though it's not funny. We won't be inconvenienced this year as we're spending most of September with our daughter at Lake George. Since Croton seems tothink this is such a great thing and doesn't mind making everyone else miserable, maybe everyone should get out of town for a day or two and save themselves the aggravation.
ReplyDeleteSincerely
Garret J.L. Ostermann
Happy to live in Montrose and hoping I never need to get to a hospital on the Toughman raceday.
I'd like everything you got on all the problems here but can't find your email. I'm sure you have mine. Please send. KP
ReplyDeleteWe live in Ossining and used to go to a restaurant in Croton all the time. We haven't been back since last year and as long as Croton continues to do this, we're not coming back period. What a nightmare that was last year trying to get to a funeral. We missed the entire service.
ReplyDeleteI heard they're gone? True? Please let it be so!
ReplyDeleteAccording to the official website: The Toughman Website indicates that the 2016 race--usually held in Croton and the surrounding community despite a litany of issues year after year--will now be held in Harriman State Park, Lake Welch, on September 18, 2016. See the bottom of the page at their website: http://www.toughmantri.com/toughman-race-schedule/
