CROTON IN THE NEWS: YO LA TENGO, IRA KAPLAN

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

JOURNAL NEWS: YO LA TENGO'S GOT IT DOWN

HIGHLIGHTS:
--Kaplan grew up in Croton-on-Hudson's Red Hill neighborhood — where his parents, Marilyn and Abraham Kaplan, moved from Queens when he was 2 — until he went to Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers.
--He does remember the teenage ritual of waiting around in Croton to hitch a ride home. "I suspect people don't do that any more. But back then it was like a taxi stand," Kaplan says. "There were so many kids down there waiting for a ride up the hill. And because Lee Hays [who sang bass in The Weavers with Pete Seeger] lived at the top of hill, you never knew who might pick you up. So getting a ride from Arlo Guthrie one day was a big thrill."

  1. Ahem. From Queens they moved to Wolf Road, and from there to "Red Hill." The cries of "I-RAH!!!!" can still be heard echoing in the neighborhood.
