We popped into The Croton Historical Society to check on the progress of the new exhibit (it's going to be a multi-media event and there's still some more wiring to be done).
In any case, we came across this charming article from February 1967 entitled "Interfaith Happening", detailing a dinner-dance that was held at Holy Name of Mary, published in the Croton Cortlandt News (click on the photo originally taken by Don Wilson). We thought you might enjoy reading about it.
THE BIG SOCIAL EVENT OF THE SEASON: Three Hundred attended the Interfaith Dinner-Dance Saturday night at Holy Name of Mary Church. Allan Seide did some spectacular decorations; the Croton Steak House served the dinner, and the Jesse Beller Quartet supplied the dance music.
Croton had its first "Happening" last Saturday night as the Interfaith Council of Churches held its 3rd annual dinner dance. Judging by comments of the 300 guests, the event had to be termed a smashing success or, in happening jargon, a gas.
The decorations in the parish hall by Allan Seide were the most stunning in the history of the dance. The hall was done in a pop-op art mode, with the central theme being abstract eyes looking at the guests from all directions--from the walls, the ceiling, even up from the tables, eyes were painted on placemats. The dance was a success in another way--it raised money for the youth of Croton. Cal Henderson, president of the Interfaith Council, was pleased and congratulated his committee--made up of couples representing each of the six churches in Croton. The Jesse Beller Quartet's music and Jonathan Miller's outstanding special lighting effects contributed greatly to the overall swinging mood.
