MORE FROM THE NYSDEC DELIVERS NEWSLETTER--Hudson River Eel Project Featured in June "Fisheries" Magazine
The Hudson River Eel Project is the feature story in June’s Fisheries publication, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Fisheries Society. The article describes fourteen years of “glass eel” monitoring at six sites along the Hudson River estuary by diverse groups of volunteers, students, and researchers. Through short testimonials, former student volunteers describe the impact of community science in developing conservation and teaching careers. The article also describes how community science efforts can be applied to the needs of fishery agencies. The Hudson River Eel Project was included as a robust data set contribution to the most recent Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission American Eel Benchmark Stock Assessment report (ASMFC, 2023). The article is authored by scientists and educators from DEC's Hudson River Estuary Management Program and New York State Water Resources Institute at Cornell University, and is the result of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and partner organizations.
