The photo below is an interior view of the Hudson View Tavern (original name Motts Tavern, CLICK ON THE IMAGE); it comes from the archives of The Croton Historical Society and is featured, among others, in a 2013 blog post--YOU CAN SEE THAT ONE AT A MIXED BAG OF VINTAGE CROTON TAVERNS & RESTAURANTS #1
Many of us were curious about the place--and the names shown IN THE PHOTO BELOW, only two of which have been written about here extensively: Lenore Ulric and Margaret Mayo.....And so, here is what we found, in no particular order---p.s. if you are not yet a member of the Croton Historical Society, become one today.
And away we go:
--MAJOR BOWES/Edward Bowes (June 14, 1874 – June 13, 1946), professionally known as Major Edward Bowes, was an American radio personality of the 1930s and 1940s. His Major Bowes Amateur Hour was the best-known amateur talent show on radio during its 18-year run (1935–1952) on NBC and CBS Radio. READ MORE ABOUT HIM HERE
--JEANNE EAGELS (born Eugenia Eagles; June 26, 1890 – October 3, 1929) was an American stage and film actress. Eagels appeared in many Broadway productions, and in the emerging medium of sound films. She was posthumously nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her 1929 role in The Letter after dying suddenly that year at the age of 39.
--Crosby GAIGE was a fascinating figure who wore many hats...Born in 1882 and active until his death in 1949, he was a Broadway theatrical producer, cookbook author, epicure, and socialite who helped shape post-Prohibition cocktail culture. There will be more.
