TURTLE RESCUE--A BANNER MORNING AT LAKE MEAHAGH

Rescued from the middle of the road--on his way to Lake Meahagh--a very large twenty pound snapping turtle....click on the photo.....he would not have made it on his own....

Your editor handled traffic control, while local Verplancker Chuck--deftly---carefully--got him of harm's way.  Into the lake he went on his own....Like most snapping turtles, he was not grateful (smile)--but we were all very happy.....

And so, how to handle turtles, snapping or otherwise, in similar situations---http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2018/05/its-world-turtle-day.html

  1. I dragged one across the road to that location using the towel method. She was much smaller but had a death grip on the terry cloth! Which was good because I was not picking her up. Leastways I think it was a girl.

  2. I keep heavy gloves and a plastic tub with a lid, a towel, and a rope which they will sometimes latch onto more than a towel, in the back of the car during turtle season.
