FROM THE CROTON.NEWS SITE---CROTON'S PIGEON BAN HAS NO GRACE PERIOD

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

The animal law attached to Wednesday's agenda would ban keeping pigeons and roosters in every residence district, effective the day it is filed — no grace period, no grandfathering, no variance. Wednesday is when the board sets the September 2 hearing date, and it does so on the consent agenda, without discussion. Public comment on agenda items is taken before that vote.

A longer piece drawing on the whole public record — transcripts, adopted minutes and filed documents — drafted with AI assistance, then read and approved by the editor before publication. Published under the editorial responsibility of Matthew Broudy, who is accountable for every article on this site.

The draft of Croton's new animal law attached to Wednesday's agenda would prohibit keeping pigeons — and roosters — in every residence district in the village. There is no grace period in it, no exemption for birds someone already keeps, and no variance to apply for. It would take effect the day it is filed with the Secretary of State.

Wednesday is not when the board votes on that. It is when the board sets the date it will, and in doing so fixes which version of the text goes before the public. Resolution 180-2026 would schedule a public hearing on Local Law Introductory No. 10 of 2026 for September 2 at 7 p.m. in the Georgianna Grant Meeting Room of the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building. It sits on the consent agenda, the block of items approved in a single motion rather than taken one at a time. Unless a trustee pulls it out, nothing will be said about it on Wednesday night.

That matters more than a scheduling item normally would, because two versions of this law are in circulation, they treat pigeons differently, and the packet does not say which one is going to the hearing. MUCH MORE AT Croton's Pigeon Ban Has No Grace Period — Croton-on-Hudson, NY

SHOPLIFTING ISN'T NEED, IT'S JUST PLAIN GREED

The criminals responsible for a disproportionate percentage of New York City retail theft aren’t driven by hunger (or by a desire for clean teeth). They are repeat actors.

FOUR ITEMS FROM THE MAILBOX

FOUR items:

Getting reports of midnight loud music again which your editor did not hear but sort of felt the passing vibration; it was transitory and gone quickly--at least here. If anyone else experienced more, you should really report it to the village. Have to admit it was annoying on a weeknight, however temporary.

AND

So---once again, there have been random complaints recently about some article links posted here only being accessible via a paid subscription to the media source in question....

Yes, from time to time, we stumble upon items of potential interest that are behind a paywall (this frequently is the case at LoHud, THE NY SUN and some Examiner News articles, and substacks for example)--but like to offer our readers the option of saying yes or no anyway.

These days, local journalism, information, and news often come at a cost. It's your decision to spend....or not.....yes it can add up---which is why we recommend that you do your due diligence before you write that check.

Once again, life is not free.  And once again, it's time to get over it.

AND

GETTING COMPLAINTS that this blog sometimes features AI-driven sites. This too is life. Time to get over it.

JACK MARSHALL--ETHICS ALARMS--IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK LIKE THE UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE IS JUST PLAIN STUPID

The doctrine of subsequent remedial measures holds that evidence of safety improvements, fixes, or changes made after an accident cannot be used in court to prove that a defendant was negligent. However, when a miscreant reacts to an incident of negligence or wrongdoing by taking measures that make it look more guilty without fixing anything, what do you call that? I vote for “really stupid.”

In the wake of its worldwide humiliation in the Jason Arday scandal and its craven, mealy-mouthed public declarations as the mess reached its climax with the fraudulent professor’s death, the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Education decided to hide its faculty. The staff list is now offline. When one tries to access it, the screen above appears.

A double-secret faculty! Cool! SEE MORE AT It’s Beginning To Look Like The University of Cambridge Is Just Plain Stupid | Ethics Alarms
