BACK IN 2020, I purchased a dog-earred old copy of MAX
EASTMAN's
REFLECTIONS ON THE FAILURES OF SOCIALISM at a village tag sale.
It's
highly recommended and required reading for all those who look favorably
on socialism, communism, Red Hill Nostalgia, and all their related
"ism"s.
For those who don't know, Max Eastman --click on the photo---was one
of the village's most notable residents, a recanted radical, prolific
writer, and so much more.
But back to the book..........it's also
available on Amazon; here's the description: This present book contains
the author's principal conclusions, or the principal things he learned
politically in his journey from socialism to freedom. Upton Sinclair
wrote that often we merely “go from one extreme to the other.” The
author says, on the contrary, the step is shorter from hard-headed
class-struggle socialism to a firm defense of the free-market economy
than to the old wishful notion of a high-minded slide into utopia. It is
a straighter step to take. The struggle is still for freedom; the main
facts are still economic; the arch-enemy is still the soft-headed
idealist who refuses to face facts.
