LANCASTER CO. (WOLF) — Questions are emerging over Pennsylvania's announcement of two measles-associated deaths after Lancaster County's coroner told LNP | LancasterOnline that his office has not recorded a death caused by measles.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health announced Tuesday that two unvaccinated Lancaster County residents had died in what the state called "measles-associated deaths." Gov. Josh Shapiro and Health Secretary Dr. Debra Bogen discussed the deaths during a news conference, describing them as Pennsylvania's first deaths associated with measles in 35 years.
But Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni told LNP | LancasterOnline Thursday that, as far as his office is concerned, there are currently zero deaths in Lancaster County attributed to measles.
LancasterOnline reported that one of the two deaths identified by the state involved a newborn boy who tested positive for measles.
According to LancasterOnline's interview with Diamantoni, the infant died August 14 at a birthing center in Christiana Borough. Diamantoni told the newspaper that the baby's cause of death was a ruptured and lacerated spleen that resulted in massive blood loss — not measles.
