ON THIS DATE IN 1962, WEST SIDE STORY WON.....

ON THIS DATE IN 1962 AT THE 34th Academy Awards: "West Side Story" won Best Picture, Director, and 8 other awards.

The film, directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, was an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical, and it starred Natalie Wood, George Chakiris (click on the photo), Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn and many others.

WEST SIDE STORY: Every evening the public of Cinema Ritrovato gathers at the Piazza Maggiore for a spectacular open air screening. We won't miss West Side Story (1961). Buoyed by Robert Wise's dazzling direction, Leonard Bernstein's score, and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics, this musical remains perhaps the most iconic of all the Shakespeare adaptations.
