SCHMIDT & ANDERSON JOIN NONPARTISAN COALITION OPPOSING THE BARGE ANCHORAGES IN THE HUDSON

SCHMIDT & ANDERSON JOIN NONPARTISAN COALITION OPPOSING THE BARGE ANCHORAGES IN THE HUDSON RIVER:

Mayor Greg Schmidt and Deputy Mayor Bob Anderson were invited guests at today's press conference hosted by Sen. Terrence Murphy regarding the proposed barge anchorages in the Hudson River. Among the proposed locations is off the coast of Verplanck, where there are plans for a 3-barge anchorage.

“Croton residents are concerned about the environmental impact,” said Mayor Schmidt. “We also have security concerns about having large unmanned and unlit barges off the coast of the Indian Point facility. Cortlandt Supervisor Pugliese has come out strongly against this anchorage, and I was pleased that today we were able to speak with Senator Murphy and County Executive Astorino about the impact the proposal would have on Croton. A lot of citizens have worked for many decades to clean up the Hudson and anchoring barges filled with petroleum products off our coast is a big concern for us.”

Deputy Mayor Anderson expressed concern about the lack of outreach about the proposal: “We respect the work done by the U.S. Coast Guard, and want to work with the them to ensure that the Hudson River remains safe and clean. But they put this proposal up in the middle of summer and gave us no advance notice. We want the Coast Guard to hold hearings and take into account the views of Croton residents and of our first responders.”

  2. Yes. He is representing Cortlandt and also Cortlandt Community Rowing Association (crew). We row right where the proposed Montrose anchorage will be. CCRA has seen tremendous growth since it's start only a few years ago... this year we had almost 75 rowers, including 27 youth rowers from surrounding school districts.

  3. Yes. He is representing the Town of Cortlandt and also Cortlandt Community Rowing Association (crew), which he proposed starting in 2012. CCRA has had tremendous interest and growth. This year we have nearly 75 rowers, including 27 youth rowers from surrounding school districts. We row on a beautiful stretch of the Hudson River, launching at Cortlandt Waterfront park and heading south towards Croton's 9/11 Memorial. The proposed Montrose anchorage is in our path, and it will be dangerous to have low profile crew boats rowing near huge barges.
