ALBANY – A 69-year-old Poughkeepsie man was arrested at his home by federal agents last week on three charges of mail fraud. Michael McMahon, according to the unsealed indictment, allegedly submitted fake claims to insurance and trucking companies for accidents. Beginning in 2012, McMahon spent 51 months in prison for a very similar scam after he was convicted of receiving $80,000 between 2006 and 2011 after submitting false claims for accidents.
When McMahon’s parole ended, authorities say, he began his latest scam.
John Sarcone III, the First Assistant US Attorney for the Northern District of New York, said McMahon’s latest scheme was to park a vehicle near the side of the road and wait for a tractor-trailer to drive past. He would then submit a claim to the trucking company or their insurance carrier, under a false name, along with an invoice from a fake auto repair shop.
