Your editor and some of the Elfs recently watched the 1962 film, DAVID AND LISA. It was the second time for most of us. Click on the images and links.
And from the North Westchester Times, here's Croton's Howard Da Silva who plays Dr. Swinton, the psychiatrist in the production.
Directed by Frank Perry, it is based on the second story in the novel Jordi, Lisa and David by Theodore Isaac Rubin.
The screenplay tells the story of a bright young man suffering from a mental illness which, among other symptoms, has instilled in him a fear of being touched.
This lands him in a residential treatment center, where he meets Lisa, a similarly ill young woman who displays a split personality.Keir Dullea played David (yes he was the astronaut from 2001: a Space Odyssey).
Janet Margolin played Lisa. The role earned earning her a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer. She went on to star in notable films like Take the Money and Run (1969) with Woody Allen and Annie Hall (1977), where she played a supporting role. She passed away in 1993 at the age of 50 due to ovarian cancer.
DAVID AND LISA was considered groundbreaking for its time, and although somewhat dated today, it still resonates with superb performances.
DaSilva's performance was in fact widely appreciated for its calm authority and empathetic presence, offering a stabilizing force amid the emotional turbulence of the film. He was praised for portraying Dr. Swinford with gentle wisdom and restraint, avoiding the melodramatic tendencies common in portrayals of mental health professionals at the time. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) nominated Da Silva for Best Foreign Actor.
DAVID AND LISA is available on Amazon here.
