CROTON'S JAN JOHNSEN IN THE NEWS

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton -- our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

JOURNAL NEWS - POOLS WITH PERSONALITY - Just like people, pools, too, have personality — if they’re lucky. Landscape designer Jan Johnsen, who studied and worked in Japan and Hawaii, has designed many over the last 40 years, and she believes every one of them has its own persona. BEN-HUR, THE 1925 SILENT VERSION & MUCH MORE

Long before there was a Ben-Hur with Charleton Heston and Stephen Boyd, there was the 1925 silent film staring Ramon Navarro. You can read more about the 1925 version here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben-Hur_%281925_film%29

To the right is the cover from the souvenir movie program, quintessentially deco and rendered for maximum effect. Indeed, Novarro's skimpy costume in the film caused quite a stir at the time. Billed as the next male sex symbol after the death of Rudolph Valentino, you can read more about him here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramon_Navarro

To learn more about Lew Wallace, the author of Ben-Hur, A Tale of the Christ, the productions and more that followed, visit http://ben-hur.com/benhur.html

ASTORINO SIGNS SOURCE OF INCOME

As Croton is one of the 31 communities identified in the Spano-brokered housing settlement, here is the latest.

Compelled to do so, County Executive Astorino has signed source of income (SOI) into law. The legislation outlaws discrimination against renters who use government income such as Section 8 vouchers, etc. to pay landlords. Read more about it here: http://polhudson.lohudblogs.com/2013/06/28/fair-housing-settlement-westchester-executive-signs-income-discrimination-legislation/

The village has also announced today that Harmon re-zoning is now in effect as petitioners will not appeal. It will be a few weeks before it is written into the village code. Thus far, no business or property owners have expressed an interest in the rezoning for housing.

Stay tuned for THIS MONTH IN CROTON--196? (We haven't decided what year yet!)

THE VINTAGE TELEPHONE, PRINCESS OR OTHERWISE

Not long ago we were helping a friend clean out her late mother's apartment when we came across a 1960's pink Princess telephone carefully preserved on a  back shelf. The friend doesn't remember it at all...just the heavy black telephone that could have dispatched an intruder with one well-placed smack across the chops--and which served her family for years before being replaced with the latest in technology--a 1970's mock crocodile wall mount in the kitchen.

So...when we came across this article in THE EXAMINER NEWS by Home Guru Bill Primavera, we just had to share. Times sure have changed. Click on the link: http://www.theexaminernews.com/home-guru-7/

PART 2, THE METROPOLITAN PLAYERS, A FORGOTTEN CHAPTER IN CROTON'S HISTORY

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Long before there was a Shakespeare Festival, Croton residents were entertained by "The Metropolitan Players". Read Part 1 here http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-metropolitan-players-forgotten.html

Then click on the photos here. Online for your viewing pleasure is the program for WHAT ANNE BROUGHT HOME - introduced by WASHINGTON ENGINE CO., NO. 2 - SEPT. 29, 1930.  It's filled with great ads and more, a true time capsule of the village.

With thanks once again to THE CROTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY.

THE METROPOLITAN PLAYERS, A FORGOTTEN CHAPTER IN CROTON'S HISTORY

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Long before there was a Shakespeare Festival, Croton residents were entertained by "The Metropolitan Players".

Courtesy of the archives at The Croton Historical Society, it's a forgotten chapter for most.  A review of the file also shows that the performances largely benefited local causes such as the unemployed of Croton in the years following the depression. To cite another example, a performance of "Laff That Off" in 1932 was sponsored by Croton's Chemical Engine Company for the benefit of an injured member. Ads from the assorted play programs also feature old Croton businesses such as The Log Cabin Restaurant; and it appears nearly all the performances were at the high school.  Incidentally, the "Help the Unemployed of Croton" poster below is from a prior Historical Society exhibit: Portraits of a Moment Past 1930.

Click on the scans below. SEE PART 2 OF THE METROPOLITAN PLAYERS HERE http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2013/06/part-2-metropolitan-players-forgotten.html
