Continuing our popular "Croton Memories" series into 2012: A CROTON WELCOME HOME: World War I - To the right (click on the photo) is the village welcoming reception for returning soldiers from WWI; the building shown is what was then the Croton High School, now the village municipal building. You can see another photo of returning Croton WWI veterans Patrick Deery, Michael Rizzuto, John Boyle, John Manning, Allan Boyle, John Reilly, & James Sullivan at this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22283683@N07/6759623959/in/photostream
I am so very happy you are continuing this series into the new year. Many many thanks.

This series is so wonderful, our historical society is worth a million, and Scott's articles are the perfect compliment.
ReplyDeleteYou said it Peter. My dad told me that the days of parades here in Croton are gone. There was a time when they were looked upon with reverence, respect for our military, and opportunity for general fellowship in the village. Officials dressed to show their respect and they certainly didn't show up at memorials wearing shorts and t-shirts. Meanwhile kids looked forward to the parade, to looking up to soldiers coming home for the sacrifices they made, and they were taught this first and foremost in schools. Everything is different now and while some of the difference is good, I have to agree that we have lost a lot more than we have gained when it comes to these particular issues.
