TWO FROM THE MAILBOX

The blog continues to get a lot of questions about the Substack platform; apparently, we have quite a few would be-writers/journalists who would like to give "it a whirl".

Many of these were answered earlier at EverythingCroton: MAILBOX--SUBSTACK QUESTIONS, CROTON SENIOR CLUB HALLOWEEN REQUESTS! SOME PAST YEARS

Good luck and keep us posted. INCLUDES THE MOST POPULAR SUBSTACKS LIST AS WELL.

INVASIVES! DEC DELIVERS---FIREWOOD AND INVASIVE PESTS

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Best Practices for Using Firewood this Fall---Chillier days are on the horizon and fall activities are in full swing! Before you build a bonfire under the stars with friends and family or cozy up next to your woodburning stove on a crisp autumn day, it is important to know how to responsibly use firewood.

Help stop invasive pests and diseases from hitching a ride to a new area by following these quick tips from the New York State firewood regulation:Untreated firewood may not be imported into New York from any other state or country.

Untreated, New York-grown firewood must stay within a 50-mile radius of its source of origin.

If transporting untreated firewood and your destination is within 50 miles, you must fill out a Self-Issued Certificate of Origin.

If purchasing and transporting untreated firewood, it must have a receipt or label that identifies the firewood source; hold onto your receipt until all the firewood is burned. MORE AT Firewood and Invasive Pests - NYSDEC

SCAM ALERTS

***REPORTS OF SCAMMERS, PANHANDLERS (NO  "HANDMAIDENS" this time) ALLEGEDLY COLLECTING FOR "LOCAL FOOD PANTRY" --DOWN AT THE SHOPRITE yesterday--again, THIS DOES NOT LOOK LEGITIMATE but as always do you your own due diligence should you encounter these folks.  One reader said she attempted to get the name of the food pantry being collected for and a closer look at the "STOP TRUMP" SIGNAGE and was "brushed off".  It is perhaps best to simply avoid these individuals.

FROM OUR FRIENDS AT EFSP---TRADITION AND INNOVATION, THE CINEMATIC WORK OF LUCHINO VISCONTI

Tradition and Innovation. The Cinematic Work of Luchino Visconti

Ivo Blom is in Paris to attend the international symposium 'Tradition et invention. L’œuvre filmique de Luchino Visconti' (Tradition and Innovation. The Cinematic Work of Luchino Visconti), organised from 4 to 6 November by Paris 1 Panthéon – Sorbonne / Institut Acte; and the University of Pisa. Today Ivo will give a lecture (in French!) on Visconti's formative years in Paris. The symposium marks the 120th anniversary of Visconti’s birth (1906) and the 50th anniversary of his death (1976). The organisers aim to revisit key aesthetic, critical and historical issues for the reception of his work. EFSP shows postcards and stills we acquired of the maestro's films, plus a few snapshots we took ourselves. MORE AT European Film Star Postcards: Tradition and Innovation. 11/12---HESSIAN HILLS SCHOOL, CROTON FRIENDS OF HISTORY

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

The Hessian Hills School---The Hessian Hills School was an influential progressive school in Croton-on-Hudson from 1925 to 1952. It was founded in a garage by a group of parents and soon moved to an old house on Glengary Road. When the school was destroyed by fire in 1931 funds were raised to build a large modern building that today is Temple Israel of Northern Westchester. Hessian Hills called itself an “experimental school” and was associated with six other experimental private schools in and around New York City which pioneered creative techniques of teaching art, music, science and social studies. The presentation by Village Historian Marc Cheshire is based on a collection of material at the Croton Historical Society and archival research. Thursday, November 12, 7 p.m. at the Croton Free Library, 171 Cleveland Drive, Croton-on-Hudson, NY. This event is free. MORE AT Croton Friends of History
