The First Amendment is a foundational part of the U.S. Constitution (ratified in 1791) that prevents the government from restricting fundamental human rights. It protects five core freedoms: religion, speech, the press, assembly, and petition.

You can read the full text of the First Amendment below:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
