OBITUARY & SERVICE INFO FOR SARAH "SALLY" B. WEST

Sally West passed away peacefully on August 5, 2021 at the age of 91. Ominously, she was born in Portsmouth, VA on Bastille Day, July 14, 1930 to Pinky Miller Brennan and Thomas Walter Brennan. She attended Vermont Junior College and the University of Colorado, picking up the nickname "Rebel" along the way. She also picked up her Masters at New York University.

Sally moved to Croton-on-Hudson, NY with her husband Charlie in 1959, who famously said at the time, "Okay Sally, you're now in the Greenwich Village of Westchester." There she raised two sons, made many friends, served on various local committees, sat on the board of St. Mary's School in Peekskill, and worked for many years as a Lead Interpreter at Van Cortlandt Manor, where she developed a keen interest in poisonous plants.

Sally was an avid gardener, investing heavily in deer fencing and squirt guns for her yearly battles with Croton's critters. She was a dancer, with an affinity for Irish reels and contra dances, rarely injuring her partners. She laughed easily and often, and she was a voracious reader, frequently finishing a book a day. An enthusiastic traveler, her adventures included trips to Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Central America. After her divorce, she worked as an archivist for the Olivetti Corporation in Milan, Italy, the Historical Society of San Diego, California and finally, the Croton Free Library.

Sally is survived by a sister, Josephine Alexander of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, her sons Ty (Kathryn) who has finally forgiven her for hiding liver in the spaghetti sauce on his 18th birthday, and Adam whom, at 8 years old she dressed in his Little League uniform and placed precariously in front of the Bulldozers in an effort to prevent the expansion of the County dump on Croton Point. She will also be missed by her four grandchildren: Matthew, Meredith (William), Taylor and Kate.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CrotonEMSinc.org and the Croton Caring Committee. A celebration of her life is being planned for a later date. https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/croton-on-hudson-ny/sarah-west-10297709?fbclid=IwAR0_QUEEEvZxmzc4i83U5uTf2ZATTk9c2D5qgB4x6-uecqVk-PiMuF-Kls4
