To the editor,
Last year I sent a letter saying that accepting the Gouveia property was not a good idea. The reasons being that the Village could not sustain it financially, and that it would become a drain on existing resources. Many other communities that accepted similar bequests have regretted that decision.
Our status today is that we have used the DPW to cut and trim trees, we have added an additional $10,000 to have the grass cut, and we have an unusable building and unacceptable road. We have the $1 million endowment sitting in a savings account earning less than one per cent interest. How you may ask, can we fix these problems? The answer from this board is simple—issue a $200,000 bond. A conservative estimate would be that this decision will cost taxpayers and additional $15,000 to $20,000 in debt service.
