Many years ago, a former resident--now residing in sunny Florida--relayed how her great-great-great grandmother had attended a "finishing school for young ladies" here in the village back in the 1880's.  The family folklore went something like this: Cordelia was one of five sisters and reputedly very beautiful. Her parents spared no expense in the hopes of securing a wealthy suitor.  Instead, Cordelia ran off with an "Irish rogue", eloped and settled in "upstate New York" before returning to Croton many years later, widowed, well-off, and with three children....

The former resident often wondered about this "finishing school" and where it was. She thought it might have been associated with "someone named Barton" but honestly had no more details......

And then, one of the Everything Croton Elfs, fascinated with our "Croton Military Institute"---stumbled upon this reference directly below a listing for the Institute from the 1878 Steiger's Educational Directory. Click on the images below.

Jul 30--The New York Times appears to have spread propaganda meant to raise fears of famine in Gaza.

In an astonishing correction tonight, the Times said a Gaza toddler whom it had said last week suffered from malnutrition in fact had other “pre-existing health problems.”

But the vaguely worded correction does not explain a far more serious problem. As part of the article, the paper ran a huge photo that seems to show the boy is dying of malnutrition — but excluded his brother, who is clearly of normal weight. From time to time we have mentioned that the relationship between The Croton Chronicle and the Croton-Harmon school district—both district staff and the Board of Education—is not what it should be in a democratic society. We know why this is the case: The Chronicle has published a number of articles over the past year or two that Superintendent Stephen Walker and many or most of the trustees did not like.

Two good examples would be our frequent coverage and editorializing about the struggle of the district’s low-paid school workers to get a better contract, something that took a full year to achieve. Those articles did not make the district look very good in the eyes of many district residents.

Another would be our coverage of the long time it took the district to finally begin installing AC at the elementary school, even though the money for it had been voted by district residents long before. And there have been other stories that obviously made district officials uncomfortable.

A reader says his sister couldn't think of a single comedic role Peter Strauss ever played.....(Strauss, as many of you know, got his start with the Croton Shakespeare festival).....but the reader remembers seeing something---and just can't recall the exact details.

Response: While admittedly rare, Strauss did indeed try a turn at comedy in the 1980 remake of ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER. (CLICK ON THE IMAGE.)

The original film from 1946--about a deal between the Devil and a dead man--was directed by Archie Mayo--and starred Paul Muni, Anne Baxter and Claude Rains.
