Officials said the updated “Portrait of a Graduate” would prepare students for the kind of real, complex challenges they’ll be facing after their academic career ends by supporting the “P-20 continuum,” or the entire education system from pre-kindergarten through higher education. It’s supposed to connect a well-rounded, “whole student” to different subjects to help them understand the “bigger picture.”
The plan centers “culturally responsive-sustaining education,” whereby students build “strong, respectful relationships, valuing diverse perspectives as essential to a rigorous, inclusive learning community.” NYSED believes that students who can pair this sort of cultural responsiveness with the more traditional scholastic achievements will be better prepared to make innovative and meaningful contributions to society.
