BREAKING--SENATE NARROWLY PASSES TRUMPS'S ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL

After a marathon vote-a-rama that lasted more than 24 hours, where both Republicans and Democrats submitted amendments to the One Big Beautiful Bill, the Senate voted 51-50 to pass the megabill after Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) had announced a deal had been reached earlier on Tuesday. Vice President JD Vance was there to break the tie on the bill's final passage and on amendments being voted on up until the last minute.  MORE AT Senate Narrowly Passes Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill

FROM THE EVERYTHING CROTON MAILBOX--2021--MEMORIES OF HURRICANE IDA

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton-on-Hudson: our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship -- in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

A reader recalls much of the waterfront closures--and some minor parking lot flooding--associated with Hurricane Ida a few years ago during a visit to her parents. She wondered if there was anything in the archives.

We have this:

Hurricane Ida struck the Hudson Valley in the early hours of September 2, 2021, after its remnants swept through the Northeast. The storm brought torrential rain overnight on September 1 into September 2, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and infrastructure damage across the region.

Although the village escaped most of the real damage from IDA, the Croton River remained even wilder than usual---much MUCH higher---and with white caps as well. Click on the photo BELOW.

Silver lake, Mayo's Landing, and the Echo Canoe Launch were closed through 9/6 due to flooding, etc.

A RARE TREAT: Reviving An Abandoned Model Train---AND IT'S CLOCKWORK!

This video showcases a streamline model train produced by JEP for Unis France before 1940, likely between 1932-1939. It is a 120 type / 0 gauge model that originally featured an electro system in the tender, with a full electric motor. The restoration process reveals each part was completely seized and rusted.
During an electrolytic bath, the spring broke, resulting in a slightly less powerful motor. The restoration took a couple of days to bring this pre-war clockwork back to life. Watch until the end to see this antique locomotive in action! The model's dark brown chocolate color is not the original but closely resembles it.  GO TO Reviving An Abandoned Model Train | Watch

A REMINDER FROM THE NYSDEC---USE LOCAL FIREWOOD THIS CAMPING SEASON

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Use Local Firewood This Camping Season

Many people like to take firewood from their homes before traveling to a campsite. Invasive pests like the emerald ash borer or Asian longhorned beetle often hitch a ride to new areas in untreated firewood. Transport of untreated firewood across the state has caused outbreaks of these damaging pests.

Since 2009, New York State has regulated the movement of firewood to prevent the spread of invasives. Untreated firewood must have been grown in NY and cannot be moved more than 50 miles from where it was grown or its source. Producers of firewood for sale are allowed to declare their business as the source as long as the wood was grown within 50 miles of their business and they must maintain documentation. Those moving untreated firewood for their own use must fill out a Self-Issued Certificate of Origin (PDF). Treated firewood, which has been heated to a core temperature of 160° F for 75 minutes and labeled as “New York Approved Heat-treated Firewood/Pest Free,” can be moved without restrictions. DEC has an interactive map that shows if firewood’s source and its destination are within 50 miles—view the map.

Violation of firewood regulations can result in fines, penalties and the potential destruction of beloved trees and habitats. The safest way to enjoy a campfire and protect New York forests is to buy and burn local firewood at your destination. Read more about New York’s firewood regulations on DEC’s website.
