ICYMI FROM THE NYSDEC---FISHING REGULATION REMINDER---PIKE, PICKEREL, WALLEYE, TIGER MUSKELLUNGE SEASON OPENS MAY 1ST

Regulation Reminder – Pike, Pickerel, Walleye, Tiger Muskellunge Season Opens May 1ST

May 1st is the statewide season opener for most of the coolwater sportfish species in New York. This includes walleye, northern pike, chain pickerel, and tiger muskellunge. (Muskellunge season opens on June 1 for inland waters and June 15 for Great Lakes and Tributaries.)

Spring is one of the best times of year to fish for these species because not only are they feeding aggressively, but they’re usually found in shallower water during and just after their spawning season. Effective baits for walleye can include artificial lures such as jigs, crankbaits, stickbaits, as well as live bait harnesses. For northern pike casting swimbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and spoons along and around structure works well in the spring.

Hudson River Music Fest Brings Jam Bands to Croton Point Park

Robert Brum — April 22, 2025

The inaugural Hudson River Music Festival will be bringing some of the top names in jam-band music to Croton Point Park on Saturday, June 14.

The festival, whose producers include Capitol Theatre owner Peter Shapiro’s Dayglo Presents, fills the void left by the Clearwater Festival, started by Pete and Toshi Seeger. Through a blend of music, art, and activism, the festival strives to promote environmental stewardship, social justice, and community engagement while celebrating the river’s cultural and ecological importance.

Musical acts include Grahame Lesh & Friends featuring Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Company, Allman Brothers Band), Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes), Jen Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), Lucius featuring Griffin and Taylor Goldsmith, Madison Cunningham, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Steve Earle and Friends and Jorma Kaukonen (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane). THE CROTON CHRONICLE: MEET YOUR NEW GOTWALD GARDENS

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short EVERYTHING CROTON.

People of Croton-on-Hudson, meet your new Gotwald Gardens!

Our latest beauty spot invites drivers and walkers to slow down and smell the flowers.

On September 10, 1939, the building that now houses Our Saviour Lutheran Church, at 56 Cleveland Drive, was dedicated by a small but sturdy congregation. A dozen pastors have served this flock over the years, but the one with the longest tenure was the Reverend Frederick G. Gotwald, who led the congregation from 1949 to 1970. The village named the circle at the intersection of Cleveland and Benedict after Gotwald, who later retired in North Carolina, and died in 2012. MOTHER'S DAY ETIQUETTE LIVES ON...CORSAGE BEAUTY COURTESY OF CHICKS DOWN SOUTH

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

For those of you who leave everything to the last minute (and you know who you are!!!), MOTHER'S DAY 2025 is May 11th.

So we'll be featuring special posts here at the blog to help you keep the shopping--and more--as local as possible....

But for now....

How many of you still celebrate this day with an orchid corsage? Orchids were THE flower of choice in the 60's and 70's....and still are in some families......

--MOTHER'S DAY ETIQUETTE LIVES ON...CORSAGE BEAUTY courtesy of CHICKS DOWN SOUTH:

"As a young child, I remember the importance of my sister and me picking out a white corsage for my mother to wear at church on Mother’s Day. This flower does not symbolize her being a mother, but rather shows her love in an outward manner for her own mother. My Mom would wear a white flower which indicated her mother was deceased. If your mother is alive you would wear red or pink."

AUSTRIAN ACTRESS AND SINGER WALTRAUT HAAS HAS DIED

Our friends at European Film Star postcards tell us that....

Waltraut Haas (1927-2025)

Austrian actress and singer Waltraut Haas (1927) died on 23 April 2025 in her hometown of Vienna. She was the popular star of 70 German and Austrian film operettas and comedies during the 1950s and 1960s. Haas was 97.

READ AND SEE MORE AT European Film Star Postcards: Waltraut Haas (1927-2025)

YOUR EDITOR first saw Haas in Die Schöne Müllerin / The beautiful Miller--badly subtitled but still enjoyable--at what was then known as a "FOREIGN MOVIE ART HOUSE" over on the east side of Manhattan--in a very small theatre that had once been a vaudeville venue and then later a burlesque review.  It's amusing now to recall how seeing such films was considered "adventurous".

CONGRATULATIONS VICTORIA FINN ON HER 100TH LAX GOAL

Welcome to Everything Croton, a collection of all things Croton--our history, our homes, our issues, our businesses, our schools, our houses of worship--in short, EVERYTHING CROTON.

Congratulations to Victoria Finn (Sr.) on her 100th LAX goal!! In the 3rd quarter vs. Briarcliff, while attempting a shot from 8 meters with one second left on the shot clock, … Victoria found the back corner of the goal and the Tigers erupted! Victoria has been playing ‘attack’ on the Varsity team for the last four years. Her younger sister, Olivia (Fr.) is also on the team. The Tigers are now 6-3 and are gaining momentum with each game. Victoria is one of six seniors on the team. Coach Ryan Callaghan said, “It has been a great experience coaching Victoria over the last four years.” He commends her dedication to the program and is proud of all she and the team have accomplished.
