The Kathy Hochul Campaign: Governor Hochul's campaign consistently maintained that she would participate in only one debate. Because Hochul opted out of the state's new public campaign finance system—unlike Blakeman, who participated and accepted public matching funds—she was not bound by the mandatory debate requirements tied to that specific public financing program. Political analysts noted that as the heavily-funded incumbent holding a strong lead in public opinion polls, limiting appearances to a single primetime event aligned with her strategy while minimizing potential risks. Does that not say It all.
