First up, a wonderful repro--worth re-visting--of a vintage Made in Japan "green spottie" putz house by artisan Lynn. The miniature Santa is celluloid and from the 1940's. That's followed by an ad from the 1940's drama, Since You Went Away--although your editor has seen it a dozen times or more, it's always worth another look. This film is a definite one for your movie "bucket list". The cast is amazing: Claudette Colbert, Jennifer Jones, a growing up Shirley Temple, Monty Wooley, Joseph Cotton, and more. Here's a YouTube tribute https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2lIMEmRqNw
And
finally, worth revisiting, a great still from GIANT, featuring James
Dean and Elizabeth Taylor. Click on the photos and enjoy!
We've
talked about this one before but it is always worth mentioning again -
The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore.
This Charles Graham
version is circa 1870, and the first representation of Santa Claus
dressed in a red cloth coat trimmed with white fur.
The type used in
this edition is the seldom seen anymore "Ringlet".

That role that earned her three Emmys and two Golden Globes for Best Actress in a comedy series. She also made occasional appearances on the All in the Family follow-up series Archie Bunker's Place. But her entire filmography was very impressive.

There was no significant increase in Chinese coronavirus hospitalizations, fatalities, and the percentage rate of people testing positive for the disease in 21 states that eased lockdown restrictions on May 4 or earlier, including seven that did not implement a shutdown order at all, an ABC News investigation reportedly found this week.
Health analysts consider the number of hospitalizations, fatalities, and the positivity test rate, particularly the seven-day average given the swings in the figures reported daily, to be good proxies for the severity of COVID-19, the new coronavirus disease. READ MORE HERE.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday played the blame game for the coronavirus’ invasion of American soil, calling out public-health agencies, the intelligence community and the media — as another 335 New Yorkers died from the disease.“The virus was in China last November and December,” said Cuomo in a press briefing at the SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. “Why didn’t someone suspect, ‘Well maybe the virus gets on a plane … and lands in the United States the next day?’ “All you need is one person to get on a plane. As it happened, one person got on a plane, and went from China to Europe, and then it went from Europe to New York.”
Cuomo first took aim at international and national health agencies, namely the World Health Organization, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Where was the whole international health community?” he asked. “Where was the whole national host of experts, the WHO, the NIH, the CDC, that whole alphabet soup of agencies? Where was everyone?....“Where was the intelligence community, with the briefings?” he continued. “Saying this is in China and they have something called an airplane and you can get on an airplane and you can come to the United States?”...The governor saved room in his crosshairs for the media, alleging that they didn’t do enough to sound the alarm that China’s problem could soon become America’s....“Where were all the experts? Where was The New York Times? Where was The Wall Street Journal?” he asked. “Where was all the bugle blowers who should say, ‘Be careful, there’s a virus in China that may be in the United States.’...“Who was supposed to blow the bugle and didn’t?” But Cuomo did exempt one group from a share of the accountability.” READ MORE AT https://nypost.com/2020/04/28/cuomo-plays-blame-game-for-coronavirus-american-invasion/

Northwell Health probing whether ventilators caused coronavirus deaths -- New York’s largest hospital system is conducting a sweeping analysis of its use of ventilators while treating coronavirus patients during the peak of the pandemic — over concerns that an over-reliance on the machines may have cost lives.
For so many sick COVID-19 patients, getting attached to a mechanical ventilator was a death sentence. More than two-thirds of the patients in Northwell Health facilities hooked to ventilators died in March and early April and the fatality rate was similar at other hospitals. At the beginning of the pandemic, health officials were worried whether there would be a shortage of ventilators to intubate COVID patients with serious breathing and lung problems. But then discussion in the medical community turned to whether the machines were being overused and possibly contributing to a higher death rate. ALBANY — Retail stores, hair salons and barber shops across much of New York had been crafting meticulous plans to reopen their doors to customers Friday after more than two months of coronavirus shutdown.
Local government leaders had been preparing for a glimmer of economic hope, telling residents to assume they would receive the all-clear to begin Phase 2 of New York's reopening process.
Then Gov. Andrew Cuomo took to the radio. Cuomo, a Democrat, suggested in a radio interview Thursday afternoon that five regions of the state would not begin Phase 2 on Friday morning, as they had been anticipating for two weeks. GOVERNOR'S LACK OF COMMUNICATION--CHAOS
CHAOS: LOCAL COUNTY LEADERS VOICE FRUSTRATION OVER GOVERNOR'S LACK OF COMMUNICATION
(WETM) – “Unprofessional,” “confusion”, and “chaos.” That’s how local county leaders are describing the lead up to phase two when it comes to receiving help from Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office. Chemung County Executive Christopher Moss and Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler both expressed frustration over the lack of communication from Governor Cuomo’s office regarding guidelines for phase two with just hours left for businesses to prepare. “I think it’s highly unprofessional, I think it’s just infuriating that we’ve been planning for weeks for phase two trying to answer questions and the Governor’s office can’t even release guidance about the details on this,” said Wheeler. ESCO Probably Costing You Money Instead Of Saving It--From Ella Preiser, Communications Administrator, Council of Greenburgh Civic Associations
A Message to All: At this time when so many people are out of work and small business owners are concerned about their survival, some Council of Greenburgh Civic Associations (CGCA) representatives are deeply troubled that the Greenburgh Town Board has not taken the opportunity to inform people about a possible way to save some money.
The CGCA urges you to check your monthly Con Edison bill. If the bill indicates your electricity supplier is Constellation and your supply cost is 7.709¢ per kWh, you were probably enrolled in this ESCO (starting January 2019) by the Greenburgh Town Board. If enrolled, you have been paying considerably more than those of us who “opted out” of this ESCO. Please review the attached table which provides information on the kWh costs per billing cycle for seven different property owners who did “opt out.” These figures were taken from actual Con Edison bills. The first five properties are residences. Properties #6 and #7 are small businesses.
For anyone who isn’t familiar with the “history” of the Town’s involvement with this ESCO, attached is information you may find helpful. At the very least, skip to the last lines of the document below which illustrates the cost savings ($37.15 and $115.53) for a single month for two different properties. Paying the higher price could be very costly over the two-year contract.
The Greenburgh Town Board is not alone. Twenty-six other Westchester municipalities participate in this CCA. The concept was good but it is not working to the advantage of electricity users. The ESCO named Constellation is raking in millions of dollars from residents and small business owners. The World Health Organization is recommending healthy people,
including those who don’t exhibit COVID-19 symptoms, only wear masks
when taking care of someone infected with the contagion, a sharp
contrast from the advice given by American public health officials who
recommend everyone wear a mask in public.
“If you do not have any repository symptoms such as fever, cough or
runny nose, you do not need to wear a mask,” Dr. April Baller, a public
health specialist for the WHO, says in a video on the world health body’s website. “Masks should only be used by health care workers, caretakers or by people who are sick with symptoms of fever and cough.” The recommendation differs from the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC)...............A. separate study released earlier this month divided scientists on the effectiveness of wearing masks. Read more at https://nypost.com/2020/05/28/healthy-people-should-wear-masks-only-if-caring-for-coronavirus-patients-who-says/

Arlene Barbara Cohen Gross, December 3, 1931 – May 13, 2020
Arlene Cohen Gross died from
complications of COVID-19 and dementia on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at Hartwell
Place, a memory care residence in Chicago, IL. She was born in New York City on
December 3, 1931 to Simon and Yetta (Shammis) Cohen. Arlene and her husband
Jerry were long-time residents of lower Grand Street in Croton-on-Hudson, NY.
Arlene grew up in the Bronx,
New York. She was in the first class of girls accepted to the Bronx High School
of Science in 1946. Unfortunately, due to family circumstances after the death
of her mother, she left the Bronx High School of Science, moved to Long Island
and graduated from Patchogue High School in 1949.
She returned to the city to
attend Hunter College, graduating in 1954. Arlene went on to teach in public
school in Brooklyn, followed by a stint in library sales at E.P. Dutton where
she was introduced to her future husband Jerry Gross, an editor at Ace Books,
on a blind lunch date. Married on June 2, 1957, as was typical for the time,
Arlene was asked to resign so she would not share any “trade secrets” with her
new husband.
Caught up in the women’s
movement in during the 1970’s, Arlene was a member of NOW, wrote movie reviews
for The Women’s News of Westchester
(NY) County, and took her teenaged daughter to pro-choice and ERA rallies in
White Plains, NY. Arlene attended Sarah Lawrence College and earned her MFA in
Theater in 1975, then taught film making in several schools in Westchester
before joining the group sales team at The Westchester Dinner Theater. Later,
she and her husband formed a Literary/editorial agency, Gross Associates.
Arlene was active in the
American Association of University Women, serving in many capacities in the
northern Westchester chapter of AAUW for more than 25 years. She also
volunteered with the Croton Shakespeare Festival; was active in Women in Sales;
and was a long-time member of the Westchester Feminist Fairytale Circle. A
lifelong Democrat, Arlene supported many liberal causes ranging from the ACLU,
Southern Poverty Law Center, Planned Parenthood, and NARAL. During a
particularly heated battle to close the county dump at Croton Point Park in the
1970s, Arlene and a number of other environmentally conscious citizens
physically blocked garbage trucks from entering the park.
Devoted to her family, Arlene
was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jerry (Gerald). She is
survived by her beloved sister, Paula Weiss; children Alison (Annie Avery), Adam
(JJ Caruth), Seth (Fiona Kuong); grandchildren Grace and Lily Avery-Gross and
Aidan and Amelia Gross; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Elaine Gross; nephews
Drew (Deborah) Weiss, Larry (Carol) Weiss, Brett (Nhung N Moncaobʰ) Gross, and
niece Iris Gross Shedlock (Frank), and many adored great- nieces and nephews.
Arlene’s ashes will be buried
alongside with her husband’s in Bethel Cemetery in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. A
virtual celebration of her life is being planned.

Association of Illinois, the American Association of University Women, or Planned
Parenthood.
