JAMES GARNER HAS DIED @ 86

(CNN) -- James Garner, the understated, wisecracking everyman actor who enjoyed multigenerational success on both the small and big screens, has died. He was 86. You can read more here http://cnn.it/1kJNYD7

While many will remember him principally from The Rockford Files, he will always be The Scrounger in The Great Escape for us--see http://everythingcroton.blogspot.com/2014/03/70th-anniversary-of-real-great-escape.html--and the gangster King Marchand in Victor/Victoria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APuLUq1k4Rs

  1. One of my favorite actors. He invented the TV anti-hero for Maverick. Followed up with a sort of anti-hero in Rockford. That is, he did all the right things, but he griped, rolled his eyes, wisecracked, winced, got petty, and all the other things our "heroes" aren't "supposed" to do. I can see his influence in later TV detectives, etc., but no one could do this schtick and be so downright likeable at the same time. R.I.P., Jim.
